Why no open competition

The works, supplies or services can be provided only by a particular economic operator due to absence of competition for technical reasons

Published justification

FDG is only available commercially from a handful of UK suppliers. FDG-18 has a half-life of 110 minutes; this limits the distance over which it can be transported. There are regulatory restrictions on the length of time after production that the FDG-18 can be administered, and so we are reliant on a twice-daily supply from Alliance Medical’s Preston site. No other supplier exists within this radius and so competition is absent for technical reasons.
