A detailed and thorough review of the current service is planned to investigate and understand the reasons for continued growth. The growth in referrals is being seen across Barnsley. The current contract is overperforming and there is no current full understanding for the reasons for the overperformance and no reductions in the referral numbers to the dermatology department at Barnsley Hospital. This is causing added pressure to GP Practices and Barnsley Hospital who are already under stress with increased demands As part of the review it is likely some aspects of the current service will be redesigned to reflect and meet the needs of the service. Information and data will be used from across all relevant sources in Barnsley to fully understand the referral reasons and how best to deal with the demand. The review will commence in April 2023 and findings reviewed and implemented into an updated service specification by March 2024. Nor would it be in the public’s best interests to de-commission a service that provides a service which is used and regarded highly by patients without an appropriate alternative.

If the service was decommissioned, these patients would instead need to be referred by a GP to Barnsley Hospital for advice or an outpatient appointment which would cause extra pressure on the hospital and possibly increase the acuity of the patients skin condition.

Therefore, NHS South Yorkshire ICB recognises that it is necessary to further extend the current Teledermatology service to 31st March 2024.
